Paws and take a moment...

Did I ever tell you about Rocko? Otherwise known as "Meaty" in our house, Rocko was dumped at a shelter near Olympia after having spent what we presume to have been the majority of his life up to that point at the end of a chain or rope. All that time outside and being neglected had caused him to lose the bulk of his fur to a massive flea infestation, his belly was full of worms and he had/has what appear to be scars from whatever was tied around his neck for so long. One of the wonderful rescue coordinators that we work with received a call from the shelter informing her that their was a Boston (her specialty) available and asking if she would be able to take him. Luckily for Rocko, Miss Janet didn't delay because after she drove out there that day she discovered that he had been placed on "death row" and was scheduled for euthanasia the next morning. Rocko's plight only further confirmed that Janet needed to take him and so off they went to her friends farm for a DEEP CLEANING to remove some layers of grease and grime and to call Cameron and Hans, attempting to convince them that this "smelly, hairless mess is just the right shoe size for Lucca." All of that happened on a Monday or Tuesday I think and we drove to Olympia to meet and take Rocko that Saturday. It was a rough four or five months initially, but this guy has turned out to be totally worth the work and absolutely deserving of his second chance. It will be a year in August since he joined our crew.

After losing our precious Lily, Lucca was in need of a playmate and Rocko has filled that role well. All of the boys are really attached to each other, but Lucca and Rocko have a special bond and that's evidenced by their choice of sleeping arrangements and how they look out for one another on a regular basis. It melts me, seeing these little moments. Theses are my babies and yet I love that they are dogs and that we have learned to raise them as dogs. Sure I spend allot of money on high quality food and keeping a steady assortment of toys keep them busy, but mostly we enforce boundaries and limitations and insist on manners as well as getting exercise with them everyday which in turn brings us respect and we have the pleasure of seeing them truly secure as followers. I wish I had all day with these three, but then again, it would allow me the free time to collect more and that would just make us all a little too crazy.

If any of you are thinking "awww, how sweet- just wait until she has human children," STOP IT. It's not gonna happen. I saw two infants today and they made me want to hurl. Dogs are it for me because my nieces and nephews are the only kidletts I like.

So sweet. That is the bond we were hoping Rocco and Cosmo would make. But I'm sure we'll find the perfect mate for Rocco eventually. We're getting a doggy door installed next week... so maybe that will make us ready to start looking for another buddy to rescue.

was that aimed at me???=(

I would never tell you that you'll get over it, I just know that I did. But not completely. Roxie girl still goes for a heck a lot of car rides and sleeps on our bed. every night.

So while she might be my dog, she's a pretty pampered pooch=)

I think you need to do a whole post on dogs sleeping. cause that would drive me bonkers. I turn into oosey woosey goo over dogs sleeping. they're just SO precious.

Well aren't you the philanthropist of the year! You and your dad are stealing all the good awards. Maybe I'll adopt children instead of bearing my own some day, just to one-up you. Because that's what philanthropy is all about.

Awwwww, what a sweet rescue story. They can be tough in the beginning, but they are SO WORTH IT. You've just gotta have some patience and faith, ya know?

I'm with you on the "dogs are my babies" thing, although they are treated as dogs and must have manners and routine. I know some dogs get demoted when babies come along, but I'm going to make the HUGEST effort that mine won't. Everyone's different, no judgment...
