Herein lies the description of our beloved levee (otherwise known as, the dike). These photos are form the big walk we took on Saturday before Hans headed off to party and I... headed off to party!
The house we live in now, we bought because it was absolutely delightful and totally meant for us, but also because of it's location. We live in the area that I consider to be the best place on the entire Island, Sunlight Beach. Growing up on Sunlight Beach I always imagined I would buy my own home there and live out my days as all my neighbors were, old and happy and enjoying the peaceful view. My parent's have owned a few properties on that street over the years and today are living in a 1,000sq ft loft that they've had for probably fourteen years (which is now under construction to add more living space since they've decided not to return to Mexico). Considering that property on SB is scarce and extremely expensive to say the least, living near it was going to have to suffice for us right now. Our happy little home is less than two blocks away from the start of SB Road and almost nightly we walk down there (a VERY large hill which is great for the buttock on the way up) and we enjoy the long quiet street along the beach where several quaint cabins still sink into the earth and brag about weathering decades of storms. There is so much tearing down and building up, much of the view is gone for those on the "back lots," but it still has that same lovely feeling, the one that takes you back and takes you away...
A good two-thirds of the way down the road (which is a dead end) you come upon the entrance to our levee which is hidden a bit and hard to distinguish from the driveway it juts out from. We slip off the main road and up on to the levee which stretches out over wetlands and marsh, the place where the sea rolls in and rests for the night and then rolls out and abandons the mucky shallow pools for the day. Our boys love it along that dike, they know the second our shoulders turn towards it just slightly that they're almost free...
Sister Mary's "M" which is carved into one of the fabulous Madrona trees.
